MHHS is seeking multicultural community-minded individuals with lived experience as a newcomer to join our Board of Directors.
We are seeking volunteer board members who will support the following:
- Deepen MHHS’ capacity to carry out its mission and support its vision. MHHS's mission is to help newcomers of all cultural backgrounds successfully participate in Canadian society and economy.
- Support MHHS’ Strategic Plan’s Priority Areas and Goals:
1. Excellence and Innovation in Community and Settlement Services
2. Excellence and Continuous Improvement in Governance and Operations
3. Community Recognition, Organizational Reach and Strategic Partnerships
- Building community connections and outreach to newcomers and vulnerable groups
- Furthering work around equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in policy and culture
- Continue to build a socially and financially sustainable and resilient organization
- Build MHHS’ brand and conduct outreach to centres of strategic influence to further the mission of MHHS
Function/Role
The Board of Directors ensure that MHHS carries out its Mission and Vision and supports MHHS in delivering its strategic plan and goals. Board Members are expected to participate in the governance and direction of policies, programs, and practices.
Responsibilities and Expectations
- Attend 11 scheduled general Board Meetings per year, and the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Meetings alternative between in-person and online.
- Serve on committees or projects as appropriate based on area(s) of expertise/interest
- Provide leadership, governance and input in area(s) of expertise
- Act as an ambassador for MHHS, representing MHHS in the community, and in attendance at events.
- Provide consultative services as needed to MHHS operations staff/ Executive Director, as required.
- Serve a minimum two-year term as a Board Director
- Agree to privacy and confidentiality
- Act within the best interests of the organization.
Qualifications & Skills – preferred but not essential
- Newcomer, refugee or live-in caregiver with lived experience
- Passionate about newcomer settlement services and community social services
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Previous experience working or volunteering in one or more of the following areas: Non-Profit Sector, Settlement Services, Social Work, Boards and Governance, Law / Risk Management, Financial Accounting and Audit, Leadership, Government Relations and Advocacy, Marketing, Fundraising, Media Relations, Human Resources.
