Maple Bamboo Initiative
why maple bamboo?
In baseball, the Maple Bamboo bat is considered one of the best training bats. It has strength greater than steel and performs well in any weather. Bamboo, being an immigrant tree is resiient and bends with a wind strengthening the maple bat. Similarly, immigrants involved in Canadian public processes will strengthen Canadian multicultural society.
WHAT WE OFFER?
Sixty volunteers drawn from seven growing and emerging communities (Filipino, Bangladeshi, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, African and Hispanic communities) will be recruited and trained in civic participation, then immersed in public processes of their choice.
What are the benefits?
Newcomers become more knowledgeable about public processes
They gain confidence in speaking about their concerns in public forums and influence decisions that affect their lives
Host organizations are given an opportunity to reflect on values of multicultural communities within their organization and build relationship with those communities
Organizations will diversify and enhance learning and leadership opportunities for their staff and receive extra help in projects
how you can help ?
Currently, we are in the process of seeking host public and community agencies that would be willing to partner with MHHS in providing a meaningful volunteering placement for our participants. We are also in the process of recruiting volunteers from the seven above mentioned emerging communities to participate in the Public Involvement training program.
If you would like to participate as a public process trainee or recommend participants, or if your organization would like to become a partner and host a public process trainee, please contact The Maple Bamboo Initiative Project Coordinator, Olga Scherbina via email olgas@helpinghouse.org or by phone 604.306.4525.
